ISLETS
Located at around 20 km to the south of Principe, the Tinhosas Islets are a sanctuary for marine birds of the eastern Atlantic. It is the main marine bird colony in this part of the world and fosters hundreds of thousands of birds. The two islets (the Large Tinhosa and the Small Tinhosa) are thus a very important site for worldwide conservation – one of the most important in the entire West of Africa. They are non inhabited, and they should be restricted – no human access should ever be allowed. The disturbance of the birds by humans is a serious problem, and the infestation of rats in the Island would be devastating to the bird populations. You can approach the islet by boat though, and enjoy the sights and sound os this impressive colony of marine life. The Tinhosas are also one of the best spots on the Island for divers, with an incredible underwater world filled with amazing and colourful creatures, as well as the occasional shark, for the more adventurous!
TINHOSAS GRANDE AND PEQUENA ISLET
It is located at around three kilometres off the south-eastern coast of Principe and it owes its name to its peculiar shape when looked at from the main Island. It is possible to land on the islet, but only with an experience crew and on a very calm day regarding the conditions at sea. One of the great reasons to come to the Island, besides the excellent diving, is the opportunity to see the endemic Jockey’s Cap Seedeaters. These birds are extremely confident and curious, and they will come to greet the visitors. The louder you are, the more chances you have to see the birds. If you are not here to see the seedeaters, the landing should be avoided, the process is quite tricky and it is very difficult to walk in the islet itself, it is very steep and slippery. It is one of the best places of the Principe for snorkelling - the south shore of the islet. Several species of fish and even turtles have been seen here regularly, and you will not regret coming here for sure!
BONÉ DO JÓQUEI ISLET
MOSTEIROS ISLET AND SANTANA ISLET
The Ilhéus dos Mosteiros is a small islet right by the Praia Boi Beach. It is a great place to watch marine birds, as well as sea turtles. The Ilhéu Santana is located in front of the Praia Grande do Sul Beach, and you can also see it from the Santo Antonio bay. It is known for the cross built on its top, and in the Ilhéu dos Mosteiros there is a lighthouse.
