BIRDS

endemics

FEEDING: Small invertebrates, seeds and fruits.

REPRODUCTION: Very little is known about the reproduction of the species. There are records of a thrush breeding a three-egg clutch on a tree hole in April 2013, and that is all the available information on the subject.

DISTRIBUTION/OBSERVATION SPOTS: It is confined to the most inaccessible parts of the Island. The Pico Mesa or the São Tomé River are the best places for its observation. The use of a local guide is recommended.

CONSERVATION STATUS: CR. Critically endangered. The species is highly threatened of extinction due to its population estimates being around 300 individuals. The main threats are hunting and loss of habitat. It is a very tame and curious bird and it will approach people who intrude its territory – probably because it evolved with no natural predators. It is hunt by snail-catchers who see it as an easy meal.
