BIRDS
subspecies
1/1
FOOTNOTE: This is a subspecies of the Principe seedeater. It is an endemic form of the Jockey’s Cap. The palm trees that cover the islet produce palm fruits that are larger than the ones on Principe. Genetic analysis, as well as morphological evidence, suggest that the Jockey’s Cap form evolved to cope with the larger fruits existing on the Islet – they have to dig deeper to reach the succulent pulp. The wings are also longer when compared to those of the main Island.
FEEDING: Fruits, seeds and invertebrates.
REPRODUCTION: All year round.
CONSERVATION STATUS: LC. It is not threatened.
DISTRIBUTION/OBSERVATION SPOTS: Present only in Jockey’s Cap, where it is very abundant and will come to greet the visitors.
